KMU-Institute of Health Sciences Islamabad Shines a Spotlight on Respiratory Care Awareness During Respiratory Care Week 2023

On 28 Oct 2023, Khyber Medical University -Institute of Health Sciences Islamabad marked the culmination of Respiratory Care Week with a dynamic and enlightening seminar that brought together professionals and experts in the field of respiratory therapy. This event served as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of respiratory care and the evolving role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Event was hosted by Ms. Mehreen Khalid, Coordinator Allied Health Sciences KMU-IHS Islamabad and Mr. Bilal, Respiratory Therapist Shifa International Hospital Islamabad. The attendees included esteemed speakers from both Khyber Medical University and Shifa International Hospital. The event was attended by guests from various healthcare professions. 

The seminar, held on the final day of Respiratory Care Week, featured a comprehensive program that left attendees informed and inspired. It included a details oriented discussion on Scope of Practice, future of respiratory therapy and career counselling by Mr. Ehtisham (Respiratory Therapist from SIH, President national association of Respiratory therapists) and Mr. Khateeb ur Rehman (Board Certified Respiratory Therapist from Shifa Internal Hospital). Attendees also had the opportunity to delve into the world of oxygen therapy and discover the pivotal role it plays in patient care which was brought to light by Mr. M Bilal who is also a registered respiratory therapist working at Shifa International Hospital. 

One of the highlights of the event was a thought-provoking discussion on the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Experts explored the ways in which AI is transforming the healthcare landscape, promising enhanced diagnostics, treatment, and patient care.

In addition to the informative sessions, seminar provided a hands-on demonstration of Basic life support, equipping participants with essential life-saving skills. This practical segment, arranged by expert respiratory therapists Mr. Aleem, Mr. Khawja Mohsin and Ms. Areej highlighted the importance of swift and effective responses in emergency situations.

Dr. Zia ur Rehman Director KMU-IHS Swabi Campus shared his thoughts, stating, "Respiratory Care Week is not only a time to celebrate the achievements of our profession but also a moment to educate and inspire. The diverse range of topics covered in this seminar highlights the depth and breadth of respiratory therapy. We are on the cusp of an exciting era in healthcare, with AI poised to transform the way we deliver care."
To celebrate this occasion, KMU-IHS Islamabad organized a cake-cutting ceremony, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants and emphasizing the importance of collaboration in advancing healthcare. Distinguished speakers were honored with shields in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the field of respiratory therapy. 

Certificates of Appreciation to organisers were presented by Dr. Shoaib. 
Closing remarks were given by the Shaikh Atif Mehmood Director IHS Islamabad. He appreciated the efforts of all the organisers and endorsed the work by speakers. He also stressed upon the need for introduction of AI to our regular class rooms and introduced the audience to the concept of e-class rooms. 

Furthermore, organizers received certificates as a token of appreciation for their tireless efforts in making this event a success.
